Understanding Depression: More Than Just Sadness

Depression is often reduced to "feeling sad," but for many people it shows up as something closer to heaviness or emptiness — a loss of interest in things that used to matter, low energy that sleep does not fix, and a fog that makes even small tasks feel enormous. It is a real, common health condition, not a character flaw or a sign that someone is not trying hard enough.

Common signs include persistent low mood most of the day, losing interest in activities once enjoyed, changes in appetite or sleep, difficulty concentrating, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, and a general sense of hopelessness about the future. These symptoms are considered depression when they last most days for two weeks or more and start to interfere with daily life, rather than being a passing low mood after a hard day.

Depression is treatable, and most people who seek support see real improvement — through counselling, practical lifestyle support, and in some cases medical care working alongside it. If this sounds like what you or someone you love has been going through, reaching out to a counsellor is a meaningful first step, not a last resort.
