Recognising the Signs of Gambling Addiction

Gambling addiction can be harder to notice than substance addiction, because there is nothing to smell on someone's breath and no visible intoxication — just a pattern that quietly grows more consuming over time. It is a recognised behavioural addiction, not a matter of poor discipline or moral failure, and like other addictions, it responds to proper support.

Signs to watch for, in yourself or someone you care about, include gambling to escape stress or low mood, chasing losses with bigger bets to try to win money back, lying about how much time or money has gone into gambling, borrowing money or selling things to keep gambling, and neglecting work, family, or basic responsibilities because of it. Family members often notice the financial and emotional strain long before the person gambling is ready to name it as a problem.

If this sounds familiar, please know that shame tends to keep this problem hidden and makes it harder to address — reaching out for support is not an admission of failure, it is the first real step toward getting your life, and your relationships, back on solid ground.
